Why the Scalability of your CMS Should be on Your Checklist
Incredible rate of data accumulation
Internet broadband penetration coupled with the rise of tablet and mobile computing has caused phenomenal growth in online and content generation. The proliferation of social media tools such as Facebook, twitter and microblogging services such as Tumblr have contributed to this growth of ‘crowd sourcing’ content and continue to be important tools for individuals, small business, non-profit and even larger enterprises.
WordPress was a central player in data growth
One of the seminal events for the web community was the launch of WordPress (WP) in 2003. This was a significant event as it enabled average non-technical individuals and small businesses to rapidly build their web presence initially through blogs. However, as popular as WordPress has been and continues to be, there is a lot of grumbling in the tech community about the limitations of WP as a CMS system. While this might seem unfair since WordPress was not build initially to be a CMS, the fact is that it has effectively been used as a CMS and currently runs over half of all the world’s websites.
Scalability, scalability, scalability
Interestingly, the majority of the criticism about WP comes from professionals who were the early adopters and they themselves have developed and enhanced many of WP features to get it to what it is today – a very good product for small businesses running CMS.
So why are many of those ‘WordPress gurus’ grumbling and complaining about WP. Let me reiterate that WP is a great product and will continue to occupy a unique niche in the market. Also, it has a fantastic support community and numerous Plugins that have continued to be useful to many of their clients. However, the root cause to many of the criticisms about WP is due to the scalability issue. The heavy WP user has hacked away as far as possible and now has reached a dead end. The next task for him/her involves dealing with the challenging process of migrating their content to another platform.
This message comes across to us loud and clear, every time we talk to someone who is migrating from WP or any other CMS. Also, it is further backed up by the plethora of online articles discussing the frustrations at WP lack of ability to scale in order to accommodate the growth of a company’s web presence.
